Me & the Mosque – Women in Islam (3 of 6)

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. In North America, most converts to Islam are women, many of whom are drawn to the religion through their experiences of social injustice and political involvement. Ironically many mosques force women to pray behind barriers away from the men, and some mosques do not even permit women to enter the building. When it comes to user-friendliness for women, Canadian mosques run the entire gamut. In Me and the Mosque, journalist and filmmaker Zarqa Nawaz visits mosques throughout Canada and talks to scholars, colleagues, friends and neighbours about equal access for women. Discussions about the historical role of women in the Islamic faith, the current state of mosques in Canada and personal stories of anger, fear, acceptance and defiance punctuate the film. And Nawaz herself speaks of the spiritual longing that comes from belonging to an institution that doesn’t want you. With original animation, archival footage and deeply personal interviews, Me and the Mosque is a smart, self-aware and whimsical story that documents the debates and presents the personalities on all sides of the issue.

Here We Go – Women Living The Strike

“Here We Go – Women Living the Strike!” is a unique documentary commemorating the role of women during the 1984-85 miner’s strike and the subsequent impact this was to have on the following 20 years of their lives. This unique film acknowledges the critical role that many of these brave, pioneering women undertook in standing up against the might of the British government and how that struggle inevitably brought about changes in them. Unique recollections from women of different backgrounds including archival footage of “Battle of Orgreave” , PM Margaret Thatcher, Mick McGahey and Arthur Scarghill, President of NUM. Much has been written and filmed about the political angle of the strike and the men’s views on it, but to date, very little has been recorded from the women’s perspective. The 1984-85 strike was unique in that many women were moved by, not only the impact this was to have on their own lives, but their whole communities and inevitably their whole way of life. It roused a sleeping giant and proved to be the catalyst for many women to become involved in the year long battle in ways they had never imagined. Full film can be purchased from www.tv2day.net web site on the NEWS page @ £12:99 incl post & packaging. Due to copyright issues, we cannot show certain archival footage on this site.
